Carla L. Gartrell, D.V.M., J.D., DACVIM, is Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Midwestern University. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University, completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at the University of Tennessee, and pursued a residency in small animal internal medicine at Michigan State University, where she later served for five years as an assistant professor of medicine.

Before joining Midwestern University in 2015, Dr. Gartrell was Chief of Medicine and part-owner of a large specialty hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, and later served as Associate Director of Academic Affairs for Hill鈥檚 Pet Nutrition. She also earned her law degree and is a licensed attorney.

At Midwestern University, Dr. Gartrell has held several senior academic leadership roles, including Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, before assuming her current role as Dean.

Dr. Gartrell is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and is an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Bar Association, and the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association, where she serves on the Advisory Council. She is also a board member of the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation/Phoenix Zoo.
