WASHINGTON, DC, February 6, 2025 — The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) Board of Directors has endorsed the 1940 Statement on Academic Freedom, as set forth by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

“We support the right of academic institutions to determine how best to address and meet the evolving needs of the veterinary profession and broader society,” said Dr. Rustin M. Moore, ̽»¨ÏµÁÐPresident. “We embrace a collaborative approach and work toward shared goals within the veterinary community, yet we are firm in our belief that it is the responsibility of member institutions and that they are best positioned to shape the education and training of veterinary professionals in a way that best serves those who depend and rely upon us for care and services.”

The AAUP statement defines and lays out the principles of academic freedom. In endorsing this statement, the ̽»¨ÏµÁÐentrusts our member institutions and asserts support of the right to express their own views, study, research, and teach on any topic, and the right to develop academic programs of their choosing.
